Appearance: Like her mother Lucy, Johanna has lovely blonde hair, which she normally keeps loose around her shoulders. She inherited her large, dark, expressive eyes from her father. She is as beautiful as her mother once was, slender and petite. Her expression is open and honest, although a bit haunted. Her smile is every bit as beautiful as her mother's smile was, although she rarely smiles as of late. When she arrives in Econtra, she is dressed in boy's clothing - a cap to hide her hair, a dark brown coat over a white shirt and dark vest, and dark brown trousers.

Personality: Johanna is quiet, troubled by the ghosts of her past. Her life with the Judge was a miserable one, and she desired nothing more than her freedom. She is strong of will and clear-headed, capable of thinking for herself. She would be beautiful if she smiled, but she has seen too much to be at ease with smiling. Despite her sheltered upbringing, given the chance, she could become a very intelligent young lady, as she is very bright. Although not readily apparent, she is cunning and willing to use others to reach her goals, even at personal risk. Also not readily apparent is her courage; she stands in the face of danger without batting an eye. Johanna is very mature for her age, as she has to be, being a Victorian lady. She does not openly express her emotions, but rather keeps them to herself. She rarely speaks, and generally only if spoken to first, because she would rather keep her thoughts to herself than share them openly. Intrusions on her privacy are not lightly taken, although there is little she can do physically against such intrusion.

Abilities/Strengths: She is cunning and devious, and sharp of mind - dangerous traits for a Victorian lady, but these straits should serve her well in Econtra. She is not above using others to get what she wants, if she truly desires something badly enough to do so - her flight with Anthony proves this much. She is courageous and willing to take risks.

Weaknesses: As Johanna is small and slender, she is very easily overpowered. Somewhat emotionally detached, she may not be able to sense dangerous changes in the emotions of others.

Notable Possessions: Johanna has no notable possessions.

History: When Johanna was but an infant, her father Benjamin was wrongfully imprisoned by Judge Turpin, who desired Benjamin's wife Lucy. When the Judge called Lucy to his house to 'apologize', Beadle Bamford snuck into the Barkers' home and stole little Johanna away. The Judge took the infant as his ward, to raise her as if she were his own.

Although she knew she should have been grateful to Judge Turpin for taking her in, in truth Johanna resented the close watch the Judge kept on her, and often day-dreamed, both of her parents and of how to escape Turpin's home. For hours she would sit at her window, watching the people below walk past, and she wished she could escape and be free.

A chance at escape presented itself to her one day while she was sitting by her window, working on her needlepoint. Frustrated at being cooped up, she began to sing to the bird she kept in her room, wondering how it managed to sing while caged. A young sailor on the street heard her, and when she chanced to glance down at him, their eyes met and the sailor was smitten.

Turpin was determined that the two should not meet, for he had spied on Johanna and saw that something had captured her attention; he brought the young sailor in and then had him thrown out and beaten. This did not deter the sailor, however, and he returned. When he did, Johanna tossed down to him a key to the Judge's house, so that the sailor might come and take her away from her dreaded prison.

Turpin, however, had been spying on his young ward yet again, and he burst in on her as she was packing, readying herself to leave with Anthony. If she was so displeased with his company and her home, he told her, then he would move to another home, and move her he did - to Fogg's Asylum, to be locked up.

Agonizing days passed in the Asylum, but Johanna soon learned to keep her head down and keep quiet. She had no knowledge of Anthony's plan or the part that Sweeney Todd played in freeing her, but freedom did come one day when Anthony infiltrated the Asylum pretending to be a wigmaker's apprentice. He took Johanna with him and had her dress herself in boys' clothes, so that she and he could escape London unnoticed.

Anthony left Johanna at Sweeney Todd's barber shop while he went to fetch a coach, and not long after Anthony had left, Johanna heard an unfamiliar voice on the stairs. It was the beggar woman, but Johanna hid herself in the trunk. She witnessed Sweeney kill not only the beggar woman, but Judge Turpin as well, and had Mrs. Lovett not screamed as the Judge clutched at her dress, Johanna might have fallen victim to Sweeney's blade as well.

"Forget my face," he said to her, and he rushed downstairs to see what the commotion was all about, and Johanna hurried out of the shop - but just as she opened the door, the world dropped away and she was whisked off to Econtra.
